The number of births and weddings in Germany has fallen to its lowest level in a decade, especially in the eastern part of the country.
Around 693,000 children were born in Germany in 2023, the lowest level since 2013, according to the figures.
The number fell by 6.2% compared to the previous year, when 738,819 births were counted.
At that time, with a similar total number of births, 49.4% of births were first children, 34.4% were second children, and 16.1% were mothers' third and subsequent children.
Thus, from 2013 to 2023, the proportion of births to first children has decreased, while the proportion of births to third and subsequent children has increased.
