The UK music industry contributed a “record high” £7.6 billion to the economy in 2023, according to a new report from UK Music.

The annual report, titled This Is Music 2024, found that the UK music industry grew by just under £1 billion in terms of Gross Value Added (GVA) between 2022 and 2023, up 13%.

This Is Music 2024 also notes that this record high contribution is in part thanks to huge arena and stadium shows from stars like Elton John, Beyoncé, and Harry Styles.

J Saul Kane, the pioneering trip hop DJ and producer hailing from London, has died aged 55, DJ Mag reports.

News of Kane’s death was confirmed to DJ Mag by a friend of the late producer yesterday, November 19, after tributes began to circulate online.

As a producer, Kane was inspired by films, sampling kung-fu movies before Wu-Tang Clan.

Wilco have announced the reissue of their 2004 album, A Ghost Is Born, with 65 unreleased tracks, comprising alternate versions, demoes, improvisations, and outtakes from the era.

In the liner notes, Jeff Tweedy told Mehr of the LP, “I was worried the album was going to feel like something dark and not me anymore.

It was the part of me that I was trying to preserve—enthusiastic and furious about the world, as well as open and loving.

I reached that in the music, before I could get there emotionally on my own.”

Oakland rapper Saafir died on Tuesday morning, November 19, KQED reports, citing an Instagram post from Xzibit and the late musician’s younger brother and son.

Saafir was 54 years old.

Born Reggie Gibson, in Oakland, California, Saafir was a prominent figure in the 1990s Bay Area rap scene.

Saafir’s performance helped land him a deal from Quincy Jones’ Qwest Records, which put out his debut album, Boxcar Sessions, in 1994.

The rapper went on to release Trigonometry, in 1998, under the alias Mr. No No, before returning to his original moniker for 1999’s The Hit List and 2006’s Good Game: The Transition.

Studio will reissue their debut album, West Coast, via Ghostly International on January 24, 2025.

The cult Swedish duo has also shared a new video for “Origin,” from the record, which you can watch below.

The reissue comes on LP, cassette, and mini-disc, and will bring the record to streaming services for the first time.

Released in 2006, West Coast originally came out on the duo of art school graduates Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hägg’s own Information label, before compilation LP Yearbook 1 helped spread the word beyond the band’s native Gothenburg the following year.

Jazz musician James Brandon Lewis is releasing a new album that he improvised with drummer and mbira player Chad Taylor and bassist and guitarist Josh Werner.

The James Brandon Lewis Trio’s Apple Cores is out February 7 (via Anti-).

The first taste of the album is the new song “Five Spots to Caravan.” Hear the track below.

Lewis, Taylor, and Werner recorded their album over two improvisatory sessions.

James Brandon Lewis was a principal player on five 2024 albums: Transfiguration, The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis, Gifts, Infinite Love Infinite Tears, and A New Day.

At the time, “Heavy Metal” was meant to appear alongside a small collection of songs to be used for an EP to be shopped around to label.

Later, during the mixing of the EP, a decision was made to add other songs.

This final collection of songs went on to be the first album.

Now that I listen to the original “Heavy Metal” remixed and mastered, I realize it very well could (should?)

I really like both versions of “Heavy Metal,” but, 20 years later, I think I’ve come to appreciate this one a little more.

In Screenshare, a new commission by The Vinyl Factory and 180 Studios, artist and stage designer Es Devlin assembles a cinema screen from recreations of her sketchbooks.

Es Devlin first collaborated with The Vinyl Factory to stage a new commission, BlueSkyWhite, which was part of the LUX exhibition, which took place at 180 Studios in 2021.

The Vinyl Factory: Reverb runs until September 28, and features 17 audio-visual experiences and installations celebrating the intersection of art and sound.

The emo legends will now be playing two nights at California’s 56,000-capacity Dodger Stadium (July 26 – 27, 2025), after tickets went on sale for the first date last Friday and demand was absolutely sky-high.

The Vinyl Factory has brought together the soundtracks of two installations by British designer Ben Kelly on a new vinyl release.

Composed by Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner, Columns / Falling Columns originally accompanied two installations commissioned by 180 Studios for the 2022 exhibition Future Shock.

The Vinyl Factory first collaborated with Kelly to commission and stage his installation RUIN, produced in collaboration with Virgil Abloh, at 180 Studios in 2017.

The Hohner Guitaret was by all accounts a failure. Designed for "heiße Rhythmen", "hot rhythms" to replace the guitar in jazz and dance bands of the 1960s, it never took hold. I teamed up with Belgian Eurorack module manufacturer Joranalogue to solve one of the biggest problem I had with my wall of test equipment: I could use it in the studio, but not play it live. It is just too heavy and fragile, being about 50 years. So that part of my music remained unperformed. With our new module Collide 4 I and everyone else can now take the wonderful textures and sonic possibilities of nuclear research equipment on the road.
