Nia Archives' 'Silence is Loud' has made history as the first jungle album to be nominated for the Mercury Prize in 26 years.

The Bradford-born singer recieved the nomination yesterday (26 July), the first jungle artist to do so since Roni Size took home the prize in 1997 for 'New Forms'.

The nomination marks a monumental achievement for both Nia and dance music as a whole, joining a number handful of other electronic artsits who have made the prestigious shortlist — including Burial, Jon Hopkins and Shygirl, as well as fellow 2024 nominee Barry Can’t Swim.

Peter Runge, more commonly known as Sd Laika, has died.

The experimental music producer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, passed away in 2023, a member of his family has confirmed in a statement sent to Mixmag.

Through his rise to prominence in the experimental sphere, Sd Laika maintained a low-key internet presence and not much was known about him publicly.

A number of tributes have been posted online in the last week, including from KAVARI, writing: “RIP SD LAIKA YOUR MUSIC CHANGED MY LIFE <3”, and CRYSTALLMESS, who wrote: “RIP SD LAIKA, ‘THAT’S HARAKIRI’ REMAINS A STAPLE OF BEAUTY”.

The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) is calling on Hackney Council to step in and help save Boxpark Shoreditch from imminent closure.

“We regret to announce that BOXPARK Shoreditch will be closing,” Boxpark’s founder, Roger Wade, announced.

“Boxpark Shoreditch exemplifies the exact issue faced across the country with red tape and restrictive regulatory controls stalling business investment,” says the NTIA’s Michael Kill.

Boxpark Shoreditch has welcomed DJs including Girls Don’t Sync, Neptizzle, Ell Murphy, and Jeremiah Asiamah over the years, as well as sets from BBC presenters Nadia Jae, DJ Firestarr, and Jess Iszatt.

Burial is set to score an upcoming film from director Harmony Korine, Baby Invasion.

Set to premiere at Venice Film Festival next month, the film is described as a "dystopian thriller" situated around a home invasion... but with a twist.

Produced through Korine’s multimedia design collective EGLRD, the film reportedly incorporates AI and gaming technology which enables audiences some autonomy over the narrative, where they can “remix the storyline”.

Burial’s work on the score marks his second venture into producing movie soundtracks, following his recent work on Andrea Arnold’s captivating 2024 drama Bird, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Hyperdub is set to release its first jungle album, with Tim Reaper and Kloke's 'In Full Effect' set to land on September 20.

According to Hyperdub, 'In Full Effect' will mesh the defining sounds of "Jungle from the period 1993-5," with elements of dub reggae, techno and breakbeat.

Teasing 'In Full Effect', Hyperdub has said the record will "mix up the best ideas from the period for a new generation of ravers."

The project follows a string of recent releases from Tim Reaper via the London-based artist's own Future Retro label, while Melbourne's Kloke has had recent projects on Rhythm Records, UTTU and Future Retro.

Beirut’s legendary AHM Club has reopened for the first time in four years with a brand new look.

The club, which sits in the Central District in Lebanon’s capital city, has endured years of closure following the COVID pandemic and the catastrophic 2020 explosion which significantly damaged the venue.

AHM reopened on Friday, July 12, with performances from PAWSA and Dennis Cruz, followed by an all-night-long event from Bedouin the following night.

Following a devastating blast in Beirut’s city centre in 2020 which destroyed most of the venue, AHM’s owner, Jade, told The Guardian that it was a “huge catastrophe for morale”.

Toumani Diabaté, Malian master of the traditional, 21-stringed West African instrument the kora, has died, The New York Times reports.

Toumani Diabaté was 58 years old.

Diabaté’s father, Sidiki Diabaté Sr., was a celebrated maestro of the kora, and his mother, Nene Koita, was a singer.

Despite living in close proximity to a kora aficionado, however, Toumani Diabaté taught himself by listening to his father and grandfather play.

At age 19, he joined a backing band for Malian singer and kora player Kandia Kouyaté.

Pharrell Williams was a surprise addition to the Olympic torch-bearing relay in Paris today (July 26), joining Snoop Dogg and others as the flame traveled from Marseille to the French capital.

After making his Def Jam Recordings debut last year with Ways of Knowing, the rapper will share Memoirs in Armour, on August 2, via his own Freedom Sounds.

The first taste of the album is “Low Threshold,” which comes with a music video directed by frequent Navy Blue collaborator Ryosuke Tanzawa.

Omar Apollo will make his acting debut in Luca Guadagnino’s forthcoming new movie Queer.

Apollo is getting top-billing for the feature, which also stars Daniel Craig, Jason Schwartzman, Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville, David Lowery, and more.

It has sadly been announced that former Spiritbox bassist Bill Crook (pictured above on the right) has passed away.

The news of Bill’s death was confirmed by A Textbook Tragedy’s Kai Turmann, with whom the bassist had also played music with.

“I’m so profoundly sad to say that our dear friend Bill Crook has passed away,” reads Kai’s statement.

“He was a friend to so many, and a dear friend to me since we were children.

Bill was, and is, loved by so many people, and I’m so incredible sorry to have to share this devastating information with you.

Jane’s Addiction’s original line-up have just released their first new single in a whopping 34 years.

Part of The Vinyl Factory: Reverb, the brutalist space honours the pressing process.

The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition runs until 18 September 2024 and comprises 18 installations, including a specially conceived record room at its centre by legendary Haçienda nightclub designer Ben Kelly.

This material is typically used for roofing, but when applied to the vertical surfaces of the record room, it takes on a more imaginative quality.

‘The corrugations of these panels are not unlike the grooves of a vinyl record, but on a much bigger scale,’ explains Kelly.

The Vinyl Factory: Reverb runs until 18 September 2024 at 180 The Strand.

The Vinyl Factory has released a limited edition boxset from Carsten Nicolai.

Comprising the records featured in Nicolai’s interactive installation, currently showing at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition at 180 Studios, bausatz-noto (Boxed Edition) features 12 10” individually coloured vinyl records, each featuring 20 unique locked grooves.

In Nicolai’s installation, four Technics SL-1210 turntables are integrated into a table.

Copies will also be available to purchase at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition at 180 Studios.

Franklin Eventoff, an American tinkerer and musician invented the force sensing resistor in 1977. This allowed for touch control of voltage, which he used to create instruments. It found first commercial musical use in the Mattel Musical Thing, a cheap toy synth. Frustrated with the experience, Eventoff went on to create the much more refined Sonica. The Sonica is a lovingly crafted boutique instrument with an oscillator by famed Serge Tcherepnin, the creator of the Serge synthesizer. Only about 650 where made, and they are collector's items. The Ondes Martenot was one of the very first electronic instruments that was embraced by composers of orchestral music. Looking to expand its sonic range, Maurice Martenot developed a series of amps around the instrument, from a normal speaker, to tuned strings, a resonating gong to this strange box here. Manufactured by Rehdéko, a long defunct French high-end company, it uses seven brass strings attached to the speaker cone. This creates a rather lush and surprisingly dense reverb, with no feel of the "boingyness" of usual spring reverbs. I discovered the technique of "Moon Bouncing", using the moon as an echo, when I was researching composer Pauline Oliveros. Her experiences with "Echoes from the moon" sounded fascinating. Like with all experimental music techniques of old I wanted to try the process for myself. This started a two year long journey. With the support of Martine-Nicole Rojina (who also helped out on camera on location) I got in contact with the radio telescope in Dwingeloo, a huge dish designed for space exploration. When optical sound sample players came around in the form of the Mattel Optigan, Vako Orchestron and Chilton Talentmaker in the 70s, the reaction was luke-warm. The devices were not a commercial success and quickly disappeared. But one enterprising band from Germany took their lofi sound to heart. Kraftwerk employed the Orchestron in many songs, from Das Model to Uranium. Even today its finds fans - such as Kyle Dixon of Survive, who used the iconic "choir" in their Stranger Things soundtrack. Debuting in Baltimore, Md. in 1974, the musical unapologetically centered Black culture in its reenvisioning of The Wizard Of Oz and helped usher in a new era of Black theatrical storytelling. In its various stage productions and 1978 screen adaptation, audiences for The Wiz get to see a futuristic and fantastical depiction of the Black imagination. Чтобы согреться — ловите теплого и настоящего дип хауса самых лучших лет. Правду ведь говорят, что музыка это универсальный язык. Вот и молодому вьетнамскому диджею, который свел нижеприведенные миксы, оказался не чужд американский и европейский хаус из девяностых. В качестве затравки первыми идут подборки с лейблов основателей Дафт Панков (Roule Тома Бангальтера и Crydamoure Ги-Мануэля), но самое интересное идет после них — огромное количество красивой и мягкой музыки из Чикаго, Нью-Йорка, Гамбурга и Франкфурта-на-Майне. Может быть, эти издательства не так известны в широких кругах, но их пластинки определенно заслуживают внимания. #inthemix

​​Слушаю вечером такую вещь. Это три диска концертных записей Арта Тэйтума и его трио, сделанные в Чикаго в 1953 году и изданные только сейчас. Если вы знаете Арта Тэйтума — то вам ничего объяснять не нужно. Если не знаете, то я поясню: Арт Тэйтум — легендарный слепой джазовый пианист, считающийся одним из лучших в истории музыки. Мастерство и чувство музыки такие запредельные, что даже скромно сделанный звук пластинку не портит, а наоборот, добавляет шарма. И вообще в случае с «Wake-Up Call» не это главное. В мире джаза Клиффорд Браун был известен под прозвищем Брауни, но ещё за каких-то 4 года до его первых сессий для Blue Note друзья знали его как Брэйна – талантливого студента математического колледжа, который ещё тинейджером сознавал, что иметь престижную и стабильную профессию вдобавок к музыкальным увлечениям не повредит. Вошедший с бибопом в моду героиново-алкогольный флёр Клиффорда тоже никогда не прельщал, он с юных лет демонстрировал удивительный профессионализм и независимость суждений. Не было и дня, чтобы он не выкроил время для репетиций и упражнений – уже позже во время многочисленных турне ранним утром в автобусах и поездах его всегда можно было застать практикующимся на трубе.…

Очень рекомендую не пропускать пластинку нашего старого знакомого Сэма Гендела и бразильского гитариста Фабиано до Насименто. Называется "The Room", вышла на лейбле Real World.На протяжении 35 минут звучат всего два инструмента – акустика и саксофон (который местами вообще больше похож на флейту). Красота неописуемая. Ничего лишнего – каждая нота на своём месте, каждая гармония сыграна с теплом, нежностью и чувством.Ехал под этот альбом в февральскую метель на поезде и просто растворился в этой записи. Одно из самых сильных впечатлений начала года.
